IT'S TIME WE ELECTED A WOMAN FOR PRESIDENT

By Sandy Semerad

Twenty years ago, I wrote a newspaper column asking, “Why haven’t we had a woman president?" And I offered a few theories:

·        It started with Eve’s bad press. She was tempted by Satan to take a bite from an apple attached to the tree of life. She then persuaded Adam to do likewise. They ended up in Fig Leaf City and sin, and some folks are still bent out of shape about it.

·        After Adam and Eve came caveman and cavewoman. Caveman was low on brain, but high on brawn. When he spotted Cavewoman, he didn’t give her a chance to say no.  “Cavewoman mine,” he yelled, beating his chest. The next thing cavewoman knew, she was pregnant and forced to comply with caveman’s wishes. (Nowadays, he’d be convicted of rape.)

·        In the years to follow, women made headway, but slowly, because they chose to champion the causes of others. During slavery, women protested man’s inhumanity to man. Women fought for the rights of African Americans to vote when these same women didn’t have the privilege to vote themselves.

But what do you think? Why have countries like England, Norway and India—to name three—had women presidents and the United States has not? Could it be in "The land of the free and home of the brave” we are still hung up on Eve, likening her and women in general to inferior, evil temptresses who use their sexuality to manipulate men?

Crazy. Anyone who’s read the Bible knows Jesus was a liberated man. But regardless of His love and respect for women, many of the writings of women never made it into the Bible. I don’t know why exactly, but some biblical scholars claim the men who loved Jesus were jealous of the women in His life and used the Bible to reinforce the idea of male dominance and female inferiority.

Whatever the reasons, I think we need to get over it and move forward and elect a woman for President. Not just any woman, but an elegant woman with enormous intelligence, compassion, experience and political acumen.

A woman like Hillary Clinton, a woman who will empower all Americans at a crucial time when we desperately need a woman’s touch and leadership.  Please join me in supporting Hillary, and don't let others dissuade you. Go to her website, read her biography, listen to what she offering. If Hillary wins, we can't lose. She’ll be the best President ever.  www.hillaryclinton.com.
